San Jose Chinese School Extracurricular Classes

Welcome to the San Jose Chinese School extracurricular class web site. We provide a variety of cultural and traditional classes for the community. The classes take place at the same time as the regular Chinese language classes, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm each Saturday. The classes are usually 50 minutes long. The first 2 periods (8:30 to 10:20 am) are aimed at ages 12 and older. The next two periods (10:40 to 12:30 pm) are for the younger children. Adults are welcome to all classes.

Painting and Calligraphy
Chinese calligraphy is an ancient Oriental art that communicates the character of the writer. In this class you will practice the eight basic brush strokes through the word "Yun". You will learn to use the brush, along with the three other “treasures of the study”: ink stick, paper, and ink stone. The novice class will practice through tracing printed words in the copybook. The intermediate class will copy model characters onto semitransparent paper. Chinese brush painting also depends on a good foundation of brush strokes. Students will paint simple yet expressive animals such as rooster, dog, and panda.

Clay Arts
This is a very popular hands-on class, where you will explore new colors, shapes, and textures. Starting from a simple ball of clay, you will be amazed as it transforms into artistic sculptures. Let the teacher show you a few tricks and hand building techniques. Tools such as toothpicks, and plastic knives, and other decorating accessories will be used. Creativity and hand-eye coordination are essential for early development. If you can imagine it, you can create it. Let us show you how with modeling clay!

Fun Arts
You will learn the basic techniques of drawing and more! The teacher will combine demonstrations and individual advice to maximize your creative potential. You will experiment with different mediums, such as crayons, water color, oil pastel, and glitter. See how a bear is constructed from simple circles and ovals. Learn just how versatile these art mediums are, just by differences in holding the brush! In each class you will be given a topic to draw. You can develop your own style and improve your skills. Let’s have some adventures in art!

Adult Choir
If you can talk, you can sing! The choir is open to all who enjoy singing and sharing their talents. Each class begins with vocal practices, followed by listening and sight reading. Each student will have the chance to sing solo, while the other students listen and learn. Improve by listening and "imitating". Individual attention will be given to correct and improve your voice production and performance skills. Come join us in the adult choir to develop your individual and group singing skills in a fun environment.

Guitar
Discover the fun with guitar. This is an introductory course to learning the fundamentals of guitar playing. The class will focus on learning basic chords, conventional strumming techniques and finger picking. You will be playing Chinese and English folk songs. The teacher will provide you with lots of expert guidance and attention. No previous music theory knowledge required. All ages are welcome. Fee the joy of creating music with a guitar on hand! Bring your own guitar.
Flower Arrangement
Learn how to design your own flower arrangement (Ikebana) to enrich your living environment. This traditional art focuses on the choice of plant material in relation to the container and the surrounding space. In each class, the teacher will demonstrate Ikebana using seasonal flowers and leaves. You will learn to use your aesthetic awareness to assemble the materials into the different styles. Come to class to share the joy and get inspired. Additional fees for all the material you'll need.
Woolen Knitting
Knitting is a fun and challenging class. In this beginning class you will learn the basics necessary to complete a sweater. From knitting needles, hooks, and yarn to simple stitching techniques, you will create beautiful projects such as scarves, hats, purses, cell phone covers, etc. Once you've mastered the basics, you will learn more advanced stitches to create professional looking vests and sweaters. Start a new hobby today, for knitting is a hobby that you can enjoy anywhere.
Crystal Beads Threading
Come in and learn beading in this popular class for adults and children! You will learn how to use wires, pliers, and other beading tools. The class will focus on how to assemble jewelry with basic beading, knotting, and wire bending techniques. You will use quality Swarovski crystals from Austria to create stunning jewelry, such as bracelets, necklaces, rings, and cell phone decorations. This is a great class to challenge your creativity, hand dexterity, and patience. Supplies cost extra.
Tai Chi
The traditional Yang-style Tai Chi Quan consists of 127 movements. We start the class with warm ups and basic movements, followed by tai chi set 1 or set 2. You will learn the importance of breathing, balance, and concentration in each graceful movement. The last part of the class will be optional weapons, including tai chi sword, tai chi fan, long staff, and wide-blade sword. The teacher combines group instruction and individual attention, whole set review and individual move breakdowns. Let tai chi help to improve your health and well-being. Join us and feel the difference yourself!
Yoga
This class introduces the fundamentals of alignment and breathing. Basic yoga postures, standing and sitting, will be taught to strengthen and stretch the entire body. You will advance to building endurance with backbends and shoulder-stands. The instructor combines the Western emphasis of exercising the body, with an Eastern emphasis on breathing and cleansing the mind. Yoga relieves the effects of chronic stress by reversing the effects of gravity and soothing the organs. You will feel a difference immediately. Bring your own yoga mat.
Kung Fu
Kung fu training improves health and fitness, cardiovascular efficiency, flexibility, and muscle strength. The benefits from the training go beyond the physical aspects to improve the mind of the student, with discipline, confidence, concentration, and respect. After warm up exercises, you will practice punching, kicking, hand techniques, and stances with proper body coordination. Self defense techniques will also be taught. These movements are graceful, yet explosive. Come see why kids love this class!
Go
Chinese Go (wei qi) is one of the oldest chess games still played in its original form. It is a game of strategy and intellectual pursuit. Come learn the basics and advanced strategies from our Go Chess Master. As the player, you will use your white or black pieces to compete for dominance on the chess board. Win by making smart moves and recognizing your opponent’s mistakes. You will be practicing with other students under the guidance of the teacher. Go is an easy game to learn for the young and old, and a great way to stimulate your mind.
Abacus
Abacus is a manual calculator that is still used to teach math in many Asian elementary schools. It encourages attentive listening, and establishes numeric concepts in a clear and logical way for small children. Reap the benefits of mental math with improved memory, quick response time, and focused concentration. Studies have shown that children with abacus skills are faster at solving arithmetic problems by as much as 60 times as ones who don't. With practice, children and adults alike, can skip the abacus and make instant calculations in your heads. All ages are welcome.
Chinese Folk Dance 1/2
We are fortunate to have two dance teachers offering their variations of Chinese folk dancing. In this class Ms. Lu combines her love for Chinese traditional dance with ballet to create beautifully choreographs dances for the students. The western influence enhances the gracefulness, rhythms and theatrical effects of her dance routines. Through the dedication of our teacher, the students have excelled during competitions and performances. All students will have the opportunity to perform at social events and competitions. Come prepared to dance, leap, and have fun!
Chinese Folk Dance 3/4
Hey kids, this is a fun and joyful class that serves as an introduction to Chinese folk dance and Chinese culture. Learn Chinese folk dances, including graceful and energetic movements that are Mongolian, Miao and Han. We are fortunate to have two dance teachers offering their variations of Chinese folk dancing. In this class, Ms. Yang carefully choreographs simplified dance moves for the younger students while retaining the essence of the move techniques and theme. Come dressed in comfortable clothing. Props such as fans, sash ribbons may be used.
Tennis
This program is for tennis players of all skill levels, where you can develop or enhance your tennis skills. You will learn basic strokes such as the forehand, backhand, serves, and volley. Court rules, strategies, and teamwork will be incorporated into match playing against classmates. You will receive personal attention and individualized coaching. With practice, you will notice an improvement in your reaction time and hand-eye coordination. A ball machine is available for practice during class time. The class meets at the Leland High tennis courts. Bring your own racket.
Soccer
Join our soccer class and join the school team! We have won at least one gold trophy at the Northern California Chinese Schools tournaments every year since 1985. We have a great team of dedicated coaches who are passionate about soccer. The younger class will learn the rules of the game, dribbling and passing. The older class will learn offense and defense tactics, playing positions, goal keeping. Our goal is to stimulate a love for the game in young athletes, and to improve the skills and self-confidence of the players. Come dressed ready to play and have a great time.
Basketball
Shoot! You will have a chance to develop and improve your basketball skills, such as shooting, passing, dribbling, rebounding, defense and team play. The younger class will focus on the basic skills with practice drills. The older class will learn advanced techniques, such as game playing strategies, ball handling, and footwork. We welcome players of all ability levels. Our action-packed basketball class is a great place to improve your skills and have a fun workout. See you on the Leland basketball courts!
